Unfortunately, you can’t watch the news and not see a story about someone getting attacked or killed. In Denver alone, violent crime rates have risen 2.7% from 2015 – 2016 according to the Denver.gov UCR report. This can beg the thought – What is the best way to prevent being attacked? Simple answer is to not be there in the first place. Well, you are always somewhere… right? Being aware of your surroundings and what is going on is the next best thing. In my classes, this is the first thing I teach. Cooper’s color codes of awareness or the OODA loop are several tools to help people understand awareness levels and how incidents happen. Attackers want easy targets – someone who looks switched off, not paying attention, basically “easy pickins.” By being aware of who and what is around you (banana peel as in the picture) – keeping your head on a swivel, you look like less of a good target. Plus, you can potentially avoid a dangerous situation (not be there in the first place). In our self-defense classes we look at awareness and how to increase it and make you less desirable to a potential target.

Should something go sideways… do you have a plan? The first thought should be escape. Does your family know what to do should something happen either at home or while you are out? Having a solid AND practiced plan is a great idea. Do you have a concealed carry permit? Do you carry? Have you practiced? When was the last time you took a class? There is a HUGE gap between the beginning of an incident to the need to use deadly force. While that gap may not last very long – zero to taking someone’s life covers a lot of ground. Carrying a gun is a huge responsibility and is not for everyone. If you don’t practice, will you remember you have it? Have you studied the laws regarding concealed carry for where you are? These are all things you need to consider.

Level 5 Combat Systems can help you put together a plan and train you to handle such situations. My recommendation: get educated and practice often. Isn’t your safety and that of your family worth it?
